Interesting approach to combining an entry-level audiophile setup with surround sound. Using optical passthrough with AC3 transcoding is a smart way to keep compatibility while still getting a wide soundstage. The DSP handling on the Arylic B50 seems to be doing a lot of heavy lifting here.
